James M. Slater, Esq.
James M. Slater represents a broad range of creatives, entrepreneurs, startups, and healthcare professionals in the provision of outside general counsel services. He has substantial experience drafting and negotiating corporate agreements, including licensing, technology, and internet agreements, as well as documenting corporate transactions. In addition, James represents his clients in intellectual property, healthcare, employment, and internet-related disputes. He also provides counsel on data privacy matters and is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US).
Prior to joining the firm, James served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Chris M. McAliley of the Southern District of Florida. There, he managed a docket of civil and criminal cases and drafted orders and reports and recommendations on a wide array of federal matters. Before clerking, James was a litigator at a boutique commercial litigation firm where he primarily worked on fraud, breach of contract, antitrust, class action, and shareholder disputes. James also practiced at Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc., where he provided legal counsel to individuals experiencing homelessness. James has also worked as: a director for the U.S. Department of State’s Critical Language Scholarship Program in Kazan, Russia; a researcher in Saint-Petersburg, Russia, for the Norwegian nonprofit Bellona; a translator for the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum; and a Russian-language instructor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
James maintains an active pro bono practice, including the representation of incarcerated individuals in post-conviction relief. James is member of the Copyright Society of the USA and the Intellectual Property Law Section of the American Bar Association. James previously served on the board of directors of the Dade County Bar Association's Young Lawyers Section.
